A look at Southeast Alaska’s black and brown bears: genetics, variations, evolution, colonization history, and more. We have black brown bears, blonde bears and white black bears - early in the 20th century, biologists proposed 13 subspecies of brown bears in Southeast Alaska.  Evidence suggests polar bears evolved from Southeast Alaska brown bears. Both black and brown bears survived the height of the last ice age in refugia here in southeast Alaska. Learn more in this hour-long presentation.            Included in your Pass

Join us to celebrate the annual Alaska Bald Eagle Festival and experience the traditional food, dance and culture of the Chilkat people on a visit to Klukwan, an authentic Alaskan Native village. En route, you'll witness the natural beauty of a national scenic byway as you travel through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
Upon arriving to Klukwan, you'll visit the recently built replica of a Long House, traditionally used for special gatherings, winter housing and a place for villagers to create art in the ancient style. You'll enjoy cultural dances and songs and learn about the Chilkat blanket, a signature creation by the people of this area. At the Carving Shed, you'll hear of the significance and history of the designs, colors and tools used to pass down legends from generation to generation.
Your next stop is the Hospitality House, where you'll enjoy a salmon or chicken meal as an elder provides insight into the Tlingit culture. Here, you'll learn about the clan system and hear antidotes of humorous events, as well as tragedies that have occurred over the thousands of years the tribe has existed on this land. After lunch watch the bird presentation/release conducted by join Alaska Bald Eagle Foundation in front of the Hospitality House.
